How to remove the ChatGPT watermark (textGrain): what actually weakens it

People searching for a ChatGPT watermark remover are usually trying one of three things that do not work, because the textGrain mark is not a symbol, a font quirk or file metadata. It is a bias in which words were chosen, so only changing words changes it.

What does not remove it

Deleting zero-width characters, retyping the text, changing the font, converting to PDF or pasting into a plain-text editor all leave the words unchanged, so they leave the signal unchanged. Light synonym swapping is not enough either: OpenAI’s test found 10% of words replaced still left detection at about 66%.

What the published numbers say does weaken it

In OpenAI’s evaluation of 400-token passages, replacing 25% of words with synonyms cut detection from about 92% to about 17%. Short passages and math content were already harder to detect, and OpenAI notes that translated text is harder too.

So the working rule is the share of original words that no longer appear, measured the way OpenAI measured it. Around 25% is where the published curve falls away, and longer texts deserve a margin above that. Nobody outside OpenAI can verify the result against the real detector, so treat this as a reduction in a published figure, not a guarantee.

Doing it without wrecking the text

Replacing a quarter of the words by hand or with a blunt synonym tool tends to damage meaning, names, numbers and technical terms. WatermarkRemoverPro’s rewrite engine runs a fact lock and a similarity floor on every changed passage, so a change that alters a number, a name or the meaning is rejected and the original sentence is kept.

Open Advanced settings and set the word-change target to 25% (textGrain). The engine keeps rewriting past the passages the detector flagged until that share of your words has moved, then reports the share it reached. The same control is the --target-word-change flag on the command line and targetWordChangePercent in the MCP tool. If the document cannot safely move that far, the result says the target was missed instead of pretending.

A note on disclosure

A watermark does not determine whether you had to disclose AI use, and removing it does not change any disclosure duty that your employer, publisher, school or the EU AI Act’s rules for deployers may place on you. Check the rule that applies to you before you decide how to present the text.

Wherever this page describes a result: a detected mark is not proof of authorship, and an absent mark is not proof of human authorship. WatermarkRemoverPro's on-device rewrite can reduce detectable evidence but cannot guarantee defeating a vendor's undisclosed watermark, on any tier.

Questions people actually ask

Is there a ChatGPT watermark remover that guarantees removal?
No honest one. The detector is restricted to approved researchers, so no third party can confirm a result. What can be shown is the share of words changed, compared with OpenAI’s published figures.
Will changing 25% of the words change my meaning?
Not if the edit is checked. Each rewritten passage must clear a meaning-similarity floor and a fact lock covering names, numbers and dates, and a passage that fails is left as it was.
Does the same approach work on the Claude watermark?
Both are word-choice watermarks, so the direction is the same, but there are no published robustness figures for Claude’s mark and neither key is public. See /guide/claude-ai-watermark.
